Can we cure myopia or nearsightedness? A scientific study proving that our adult eye can be shortened and the minus diopter reduced! The answer to the question “can we cure myopia” is YES!
There is a publicly available scientific study (published in 2022) that proved for the first time in history that our adult human eye can physically shorten and as a result the minus diopters decreases in the long term!
They collected such adult participants who had healthy eyes (i.e. no eye diseases such as cataracts, glaucoma, etc.) but only had refractive eye errors of myopia of at least -0.75 diopters or more (average -2.50), astigmatism under 2.00 cylinders and difference between the two eyes under 3.00 diopters.
They tested by subjecting participants to peripheral myopic defocus. What does that mean? Peripheral vision is used when we are outside, on walks, and myopic defocus means that the participants had such glasses that ensured that the rays fell in front of the retina (and not on the retina, so they had a slightly lower diopter than their own, with which they saw the 20/20 line on the eyechart).
The left eye of the participants was the control eye, on which the participants had such a diopters that they could see the 20/20 line on the eyechart.
In the right eye, however, they had a diopter 0.25 lower than that with which they see the 20/20 line on the eyechart. In this way, they achieved that the right eye worked hard and did active focus.
The participants had to look with such glasses into the distance for 1.5 hours 5 times a week. So a total of 7.5 hours a week of distance viewing. The scientists recommended that we divide the 7.5 hours into 3-4 times a week.
So don’t be at home for 6 days and then one day be outside for 7.5 hours with a suitably low diopters. No! It is more optimal to divide these 7.5 hours over the week ๐
The results of the study: the right eye of the participants shortened and the minus diopter decreased (all measurable!). The study lasted 4 months. The left eye did not change.
When you multiply the results by 12 months, you get exactly that you can expect from 0.75 to 1.00 diopters less per year or 0.25 diopters less every 3 to 4 months.
Now we have the numbers: you must be outside with such lenses at least 7.5 hours a week or glasses that are about 0.25 diopters lower than the diopters you see the 20/20 line on the eyechart and your minus diopters will start to drop!
Of course, don’t forget about proper close-up habits so you don’t get ciliary spasm and youe eyes will lengthen again! ๐
Now we have concrete evidence in the scientific sphere that there is a way to cure myopia with proper habits when working “close-up” and looking at the distance. More to go to details in other posts.
